(description from the website)
The unidentified subject of this portrait, painted in Venice by Domenico Tintoretto, son of the more famous Jacopo, is believed to be a Moorish ambassador to the Venetian court.
I have a post of this work already, but the info I have varies a great deal from yours. Revealing the African Presence in Renaissance Europe has the artist listed as Raffaello Schiamiossi (as opposed to Tintoretto), and the man depicted as actually Don Antonio Manuel de Funta (not “a man”), who was ambassador of the King of Kongo to the Pope, in Rome (not Venice).
The massive difference here is truly baffling, unless it’s a copy.
Ah, I believe there was a mistake with the original post. If you look closely at the catalog, the Schiamiossi is actually listed as 66., which matches the number on the engraving below this painting. Also, the medium for the Schiamiossi is listed as etching and engraving. On the left page, you can see the description of 65. which lists this oil painting as under workshop of Domenico Tintoretto. The way they organized the catalog layout is pretty weird; it’s easy to see how one could make this mistake!
(I actually saw this show at my school, where the painting was listed under this title and attribution I submitted and the engraving was listed as a portrait of the ambassador of the King of Kongo. I even wrote a paper about this painting, lol.)
Hope that clears it up!
let’s try out this new child of light game!

i went to see galleries on the lower east side and in chelsea with my classmates and professor.
this was an interesting space. they took over an empty chase bank and just plopped sculptures all over it. they left all the bank stuff there and taped up all the combinations for the safes so you could poke around the old office supplies.
