I need to learn how to paint faster - this took way too long to finish. It did not help that at the end I realized my aging cintiq 12wx’s color display is getting weirder and weirder. The colors look so much warmer on the silly thing! I think I hurt my eyes trying to decide which color was truer and now I have no idea.

Anyhow, here are two of my original characters who have been living in my head for a very long time, albeit in different incarnations.

The one on the left is Khais, a starry-eyed young and somewhat hapless private in the republic’s military who has been sent on the seemingly pointless task (since they don’t trust her with the important things) of investigating a weird revolutionary cult of an empire from antiquity. She recruits the help of Acacia (the other lady here), a outdoorswoman/hunter type person whose sister has joined this weird cult.

…yeah i’ll get to this story eventually…

More Background Paintings from Motorcity, Episode 02 “Power Trip”

Once I started working “in-house” at Titmouse on the show, this was my first assignment. I drew the cold open sequence, which as it turns out is a rather important, recurring area for the Burners-their test track.  There was plenty more struggle & strife to follow as I tried to gain solid footing, but I got through it and learned A LOT!

Here’s some of the key backgrounds from the sequence along with a few other generic Motorcity exteriors tossed in.

there have been white people who have tried to speak in a stereotypical Asian accent like this to me before. it is not a good feeling. i felt belittled, mocked, and yes, even a bit afraid. behind this kind of othering and alienation there’s an implicit threat of violence. i was born in america and have lived here all my life yet when that group of frat boys approached me they didn’t see a person.

they just saw a stereotype. and they were laughing the whole time. to them it was a joke, just like this is ostensibly supposed to be.
